Still life of an Apple
time spent on this piece; 35minutes. I love this piece of work, up to now it is my best and my favourite one. The reason for this is because I find the detail very suttle and the corresponding shape for the shadow just gives it that realistic look. Here I have remembered to draw in the surface (which was a table) this can be noticed as just a line. I wasn't sure whether to show the surface texture or do a bold dark background to make the overall image stand out but I have just left it blank as it looks just as good, in my opinion, with a white background. I feel that my skills are developing especially my tonel work. To progress with this project I feel that I want to work with mixed mediums.
Rose Bobble
My still life tonel drawings inspired me to do more because they look like a strong piece of work. I found one of my rose bobbles and thought it would be an interesting component to draw because of all it's layers of different size pettels. All the layers give it a good balance of light and shadows which gives the object a strong structure to look at. After working on each pettel it seems as though some of the pencil has rubbed off so now the sketch doesn't look as strong. If I get some spare time I think I may work into it with charcoal and fix it with a fixadent. My time spent on this was 50minutes and my achievment was better than I was expecting it to be.
Still life Vegetables and fruit
After getting inspiration from a powerpoint that my tutor showed to the class, I went home and gathered objects from the fridge. Well infact, my first intention was to work on tone to sketch a tomato then I looked for the other two objects to fill the page. I am really pleased with my achievements, except for the cauliflower; that sketch failed as it is not noticed for what it actually is. In total I spent over 1hr to complete all 3 sketches. The only thing that I don't like about this work is I forgot to draw the object it was sitting on so now it looks as though the objects are floating in thin air. In future I will make sure that I draw the surface/ground in which the object is on because this makes it look more realistic.
Warm up exercise
This was a warm up exercise done during University class time. The tutor asked us to close our eyes and then open them and draw x3 vertical lines. We repeated this to draw horizontal, diagnonal and intersecting lines. This was another 30minute exercise, we spent the rest of the lesson testing the strengths of H and B pencils. I did not really learn anything from this exercise just that it could be good for the mind to do a warm up exercise before a great sketch? I could always try this in future to see if it helps me to focus more.
Chair exercise
For our learning log this was one of the first tasks that we did as a class. Our task was to draw a chair ontop of a table and to try our best to draw it to perspective. The first chair was a 30minute sketch, the lesson was peaceful and focused. The other sketch was to draw what was inbetween the gaps of the chair, however, this was a chair from a different view and this task took around the same amount of time. So in total I spent an hour on this piece of work. From this exercise I learnt how to work from an eyeline as usually I would just draw an object straight onto paper from how it looks to me, but here I learnt how to focus on one half and then the other. I thought that this work was successful as you can see what it is, however the perspective on the left of the legs of the first chair is slightly inaccurate.
Wardrobe using water colour paints
Drawing to perspective with all the lines is one of my weak points, I just don't understand the process. So instead I like to draw to perspective the best I can without them. Although this image looks slightly childish because of the water colour paints, this was a good exercise for me as I learnt how to get the angles right of the tops of the wardrobe. I spent around 20minutes drawing the wardrobe and chest of draws in pencil, 5minutes brushing it with water colour paints (of the colours of my room/nearest colour) and 5minutes cross-hatching some shadows in pen. This work is not the most impressive piece so next time to improve this sketch i could work into it more with pen to identify the shadows and light. This would make it look like a more professional piece.
